Google Play rank tracking

Unlike the App Store, Google Play exposes no official search endpoint. That makes Android measurement shallower — and any tool that doesn't say so is showing you partial data as if it were complete.

The core difference

App Store (iOS)Google Play
Public search endpointYesNo
Measurable depthTop 100Top ~30
Indexed textName, subtitle, 100-char keyword fieldName, short description, long description
Demand signal from autocompleteReadableNot reliably readable

This table is a limit, not a complaint. On Play, "not ranked" means "not in the top ~30" — your app could sit at 45 and the measurement would not see it.

How rank is measured

With no official endpoint, measurement relies on the result list Play's own search page returns. That page yields roughly 20-30 apps at a time; the measurement counts position within it.

The consequence: Android ranks are less precise but still comparable. Moving from 12 to 6 inside the top ~30 is a real event. Moving from 45 to 38 is an event the measurement cannot see.

What to do on the Play side

Where iOS gives you a hidden 100-character keyword field, Play does that job through descriptions — and Play genuinely reads the long one.

On Play a metadata change is not tied to an app release — updating the store listing and publishing is enough. That means far faster experiments than iOS. But if you didn't measure the ranks before the change, you can't read the result of the experiment.

Frequently asked

Why is there no demand signal on Play?

There is no Play-side source, readable from outside, that corresponds to Apple's autocomplete. Rather than presenting a signal we don't have, that column stays empty on Android.

Isn't the Play Console search terms report enough?

That report shows the traffic you already get and which terms brought it. It cannot show the terms you don't rank for — which is where the growth is. Rank tracking measures exactly that.

How can I be 8th on iOS and "not ranked" on Android for one keyword?

The two stores are separate search engines and don't even index the same fields. On top of that, Android measurement stops at ~30 — "not ranked" can be anywhere from 31 to 200.
